My friend is struggling...
What can I do?
If your friend is struggling with sexual or relational sin, here are some positive steps you can take:
- Encourage them to get help... through professional Christian counseling, support groups, mentorship, and accountability. If they are open to getting help, the Love In Action counseling team is here to support and equip them to renew and deepen their connection with God, pinpoint the root causes of their struggles, and learn healthy relationship-building.
- Offer to help… Your friend is likely in need of healthy friendships and accountability. The Bible says that we need to help “bear each other’s burdens,” and that we should face the ordeals of life in this communal context. (Galatians 6:1-2; James 5:13-16) Offer to be a member of your friend’s “support team,” and introduce them to other godly people who can walk alongside them. Avoid being the “lone confidant” indefinitely.
- Be real… Share with your friend about the areas of your own life where God is stretching and growing you. This will help your friend realize they are not alone in the struggle against sin and your honesty will encourage your friend to be honest (Luke 6:42)
- Let go… Keep in mind that although God can work through you to help, you can’t “do your friend’s recovery for them.” The Bible teaches that only God can change someone’s heart. (Acts 16:14) Let them take the lead while you pray for and encourage them.
- Inform yourself… It may help you to learn more about the specific issue your friend is dealing with, and the Christian response.
